On September 6, 2023, Bethesda Game Studios opened the door to the stars. After years of delays, feverish anticipation, and a marketing campaign that promised nothing less than the studio's most ambitious world ever built, Starfield finally launched worldwide on Windows and Xbox Series X and S. It was Bethesda's first brand new universe in a quarter of a century, and for a certain kind of player it was the game they had been waiting most of their adult lives to play.
A launch 25 years in the making
To understand why Starfield mattered, you have to understand what Bethesda had not done. Since 1994, the studio had built its reputation on two colossal franchises: The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Skyrim, released in 2011, had become one of the best selling and most re-released games in history. Fallout 4 followed in 2015. But not since the launch of The Elder Scrolls back in the 1990s had the studio conjured an entirely new intellectual property from scratch. Starfield was that gamble, a fresh sandbox with no established fanbase and no safety net.
Director Todd Howard, the public face of Bethesda for decades, famously pitched the concept as "Skyrim in space." It was a tidy phrase for an enormous idea. The game dropped players into the year 2330, casting them as a rookie member of Constellation, a band of explorers hunting for mysterious alien artifacts scattered across the galaxy. That galaxy was vast on paper: hundreds of star systems and roughly a thousand planets, all wrapped in an aesthetic Bethesda dubbed "NASApunk," a grounded vision of the future inspired by real NASA engineering rather than the sleek chrome of typical science fiction.
A long road to the launch pad
Getting to September 6 was not smooth. Starfield was first revealed at E3 in 2018, teasing a project that had been quietly in development since Fallout 4 shipped. The wait that followed tested even devoted fans. The game was originally targeted for November 2022, then slipped into early 2023, before Bethesda finally locked in September 6, 2023, in a March announcement. To soften the wait and stoke excitement, the studio staged a dedicated showcase called Starfield Direct on June 11, 2023, walking players through gameplay, character creation, ship building, and the sprawling scope of its worlds.
There is one small wrinkle worth noting for the record. While September 6 was the standard edition launch date, players who bought the premium Constellation and Digital Premium editions were granted early access starting September 1, 2023. So depending on your wallet, your first steps into space may have come five days sooner. The date the world at large associates with Starfield, and the one printed on the standard release, remains September 6.
Reception: ambition meets scrutiny
When it arrived, Starfield landed as one of the biggest launches of the year. It reached six million players within a day, according to Bethesda, and would eventually surpass fifteen million players by late 2024. On Steam it peaked above 330,000 concurrent players in the days after launch, and it finished as one of the best selling games in the United States for 2023.
Critically, the reception was strong but not universally rapturous. The game earned a Metacritic score in the low to mid 80s across PC and Xbox, with OpenCritic settling around 83 percent. Reviewers praised the sheer scale of the world, the creativity of its individual missions, and Inon Zur's sweeping orchestral score. Yet the very ambition that made Starfield remarkable also drew the sharpest criticism. Some players and critics found the thousand planets thinly populated and repetitive, and felt the loading screens and fragmented exploration undercut the dream of seamless space travel. It was, in a sense, a game whose reach occasionally exceeded its grasp, which is often the price of trying something genuinely new.
Legacy
Starfield's story did not end at launch. Bethesda continued to patch and expand it, releasing the Shattered Space expansion and, in a notable shift for a studio long tied to Xbox, bringing the game to PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026. Whatever the debates over its planets, Starfield secured its place as a landmark: proof that a studio can still swing for something entirely original after 25 years of sequels, and a reminder that the most interesting launches are often the riskiest ones.
Also on this day
September 6 has been a busy launch date over the years. It marks the North American release of the zombie survival hit Dead Island in 2011, the tactical role playing game Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten the same year, and the open world racer Test Drive Unlimited in 2006.
